Welcome to

Sandwell Charter for Sustainable Development in Education Award Scheme

recognising and rewarding good practice in schools

Every school is involved in delivering some elements of Sustainable Development Education, (which has its roots in both environmental and development education). What the Charter award does is provide a framework for Sustainable Development Education; identifying what schools do and opportunities to expand Sustainable Development Education through all aspects of school life. Citizenship experienced through Sustainable Development Education can bring a context and motivation to learning. It is education for life.

To achieve Charter status schools are asked to complete a simple audit grid, to demonstrate commitment SDE, this helps identify;

  1. which of the 13 themes are being met i.e. pollution and waste, local democracy
  2. a whole school approach, with SDE delivered through; the curriculum, the site, the community
  3. the next step for SDE in school; plans for further development

Curriculum resources promoting SDE have also been distributed throughout Sandwell schools. These include; Big Books, Bowater science packs, ICT geography and science resource (GIS Mapping), Blackheath Geography Pack, Children’s Parliament on the Environment, together with a Web portal linking to projects and resources to support work towards the charter award.

All of these help deliver different elements of Sustainable Development Education into school and will provide support working towards the Charter Award.

Additional support for schools looking to deliver sustainable development education is made available at the annual Sandwell Environment Fair. This event introduces schools to partner organisations that can offer advice, support and resources on SDE, which may also (in some cases) provide support for the healthy schools scheme as well as meet part of the requirements for PSHE and Citizenship programme of study.
