The world wide concern about man's impact on the environment led
to a summit of world leaders in 1992, where leaders from 179
countries came together to stage the Rio de Janeiro 'EARTH
SUMMIT'. All the countries involved came to an agreement
about their country's commitment to become more environmentally
friendly.
All the leaders of each country agreed to work together to
prepare a GLOBAL PLAN called 'Action for the 21st Century' (otherwise
known as the AGENDA 21 STRATEGY ) After this our goverment
published its own National Strategy in 1994 called 'Sustainable
Development: the UK Strategy' (Sustainable development can be
defined as development meeting the needs of people today, whilst
protecting the environment for the future and conserving the
earths natural resources).
At a local level Sandwell's Environment Forum, (which is a
partnership between the Council, businesses, organisations and
residents) is working to developing strategies to protect the
environment by examining policies and practices and modifying
them where necessary.
So GLOBALLY, NATIONALLY and LOCALLY, we are starting to take responsibility for our actions and are trying to behave in a considerate manner.
Bowater House demonstrates Sandwell's
commitment to take action locally.
