Recycling:
Solving the problem of rubbish in the world today
Over the past centuries the amount of rubbish has increased
causing global concern. World leaders met in Rio and developed
Agenda 21. There is concern over what to do with the rubbish that
is created by people every day. A number of the ways that have
been developed to dispose of the waste over the years are
beginning to fail as we run out of space. These include
- land fill, which causes contamination to soil and risk
of methane gas
- burning the rubbish, which increases the amount of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere,
- and dumping waste in the sea, which pollutes the
oceans, affecting marine life.
(these are not environmentally friendly.)
Today as people are beginning to realise that the world needs our
help and they have started to recycle and reuse:
- clothing - this is an idea that Sandwell needs to look
at soon.
- glass bottles - at the local supermarket
- aluminium cans - at the local supermarket
- paper - at the local supermarket
this list is not exhaustive. Sandwell's recycling
officer would be pleased to hear your ideas.
If we don't look after the Earth, then human and animal life may
not survive the next century.
Some ideas on how to recycle:
- Try to save paper by reusing
- Take bottles to the bottle bank
- Get your school to use recycled paper
- Use containers in the fridge not using foil or plastic
wrap
Remember we can save the earth but only
if we try!
