A CAD Challenge

September 1996

Students from Tividale Comprehensive School worked with EMU and staff from Sandwell TDC to design a working office environment to meet a need for an office training course.

The students used Acorn computers, !Draw CAD software and a variety of desk top publishing tools to set out designs for the office space, which had to include space for photocopying, sending and receiving fax,  filing, managing a telephone switchboard and computer work.

Their designs included decoration and partitions, carpet, desk and chair coordination and had to fit into an existing room within the building.

After initial training with the software, the students divided into four teams and each worked out suitable ideas for the solution to the problem. Working to a tight budget they competed with one another to produce a successful environment, incorporating pleasant colours and the lowest cost. They printed their designs in colour to produce a visual display.

The project led to the award of CREST certificates to the students, as well as providing some of them with suitable coursework for GCSE IT and D and T projects.
